Catherine Johnson

It’s an understatement that life can be painful and complicated. Understanding how to navigate it all on our own can be overwhelming. Reaching a point where we realize we want someone to come alongside us in the struggle takes a lot of courage. The fact you are here looking at this is a first step towards healing. If you choose to begin your counseling journey here, I would be honored to walk with you on the path to a healthier and more manageable life.

What I Would Bring to Our Counseling Relationship:

Safety and Collaboration: Everyone has a unique story. A main goal of mine is to ensure that you have a safe space to explore your life experiences in without fear of judgement. You deserve a space where you can lay your burdens down and begin to feel heard, seen, and understood through a collaborative relationship based on empathy, trust, and respect.

Holistic Perspective: I believe that true healing comes from addressing every area of a person’s life. We will address your thoughts, emotions, physical health, relationships, and spiritual life. If you ignore one of those areas, you are not treating a whole person but a small part of them. I believe in helping you understand each area, how they interact, and their impact on your life.

Trauma Informed: “We have learned that trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body.” (-Bessel A. Van der Kolk). As your counselor, I will bring an awareness and understanding of trauma, how it impacts/interacts with a person as a whole, and multiple different techniques to help you find healing.

Hope: Finding hope in the pain and suffering in life can feel impossible. I am here to be a harbor of hope as I lean to the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit. We will work together to find your way back to hope as you work towards healing and growth.

Areas of Focus:

  • Individuals: Adults 18+ and Teens 12+
  • Trauma, Childhood Abuse/ Neglect, Dissociation
  • Mental Health Issues: PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar, OCD, etc.
  • Relationship Issues: communication issues, conflict management, boundaries, Co-dependency, grief and loss, etc.
  • Identity Issues
  • Spiritual Growth
  • Stage of Life Issues
  • Emotional Regulation/De-stress Tolerance/ Mindfulness

Types of Theories or Models Used:

Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Story-Informed Trauma Therapy (SITT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), attachment theory, somatic interventions

About Me:

I am originally from California and moved out to New Orleans nine years ago to finish college at Tulane University. I then went onto the New Orleans Baptist Seminary for my Masters in Clinical Mental Health and have been working in the city ever since. I truly have come to love New Orleans with my whole heart and love being here. In my free time I love listening to music, going to see concerts, practicing photography, hanging with friends, reading, and exploring nature.
