Q&As
What is the difference between a Counselor in Training, PLPC, and LPC/LMFT?
Counselor in Training, or CITs, are currently in a Master’s Level Therapy program, which means they have weekly supervision with a Licensed Professional Counselor. Research tells us that CITs perform just as well, if not better at times, than Licensed counselors because they are eager to help and are learning the current best practices.
Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselors, or PLPCs, are counselors who have completed their Master’s Degree and have been approved by the state licensure board to see clients as they work towards achieving professional licensure status.
A Licensed Professional Counselor, or LPC, is a counselor who has a Master’s degree and has completed his/her post graduate hours for licensure. They are recognized by the state licensing board and are required to renew their licenses every two years.
A Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, or LMFT, is a therapist who has a Master’s degree and has completed his/her post graduate hours for licensure. They are recognized by the state licensing board and are required to renew their licenses every two years.
Are appointments in person or online?
We offer both In Person and Online counseling sessions.
Our In Person sessions are located at our office; the address is 2750 Lake Villa Drive, Suite 301, Metairie, LA 70002.
We use our HIPAA compliant Electronic Health Record system for telehealth counseling sessions.
How long does counseling last?
Each session is 50 minutes long. The number of sessions depends on your counseling goal(s) and the modality of treatment. Both your goals and treatment plan can be discussed with your specific Counselor.
Also, you pay per session. This means you are not tied to a certain number of sessions and can terminate therapy at any time.
What is your fee for counseling?
The following fees are based on 50 minutes long sessions. If a session is longer than 50 minutes, then the fee increases based on the amount of time added.
Fees for LPCs & LMFTs are $135 per session. We accept BCBS and Aetna insurance for all licensed counselors or therapists.
Fees for PLPCs are $90 per session.
All clients paying out of pocket are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate before the first appointment. These are available upon request and automatically given to each new client who is not using insurance.
Do you take insurance?
Currently, all LPCs and LMFTs are In Network Providers within the Blue Cross Blue Shield network. While we work directly with this insurance company to file claims, we are not familiar with every detail of your specific policy. Since everyone’s policy is different, we encourage you to know your policy and fully understand your coverage and limits.
If you are seeing a LPC or a LMFT and have another insurance company, then we can give you a detailed receipt called a Super Bill. With this document, you can file your own Out of Network claim with your insurance company. We cannot guarantee they will pay your claim; we encourage you to call your insurance company if this is an option you wish to explore.
PLPCs and Counselors in Training are not allowed to bill insurance, which is why they have reduced fees.
Does my insurance cover marriage counseling?
Many insurance plans do NOT cover marriage counseling. You can call your insurance company to ask them about your specific coverage benefits.
Some Counselors will see a couple and file it as an individual claim with family support. This requires that one individual in the pair have a mental health diagnosis. We do not practice this way unless a spouse/partner is truly coming to counseling in order to help his/her significant other as they embark on their own mental health journey.
What is Christian counseling & how is it different from non-Christian counseling?
Christian counseling at Full Life uses the Bible as the source of Truth and views the Holy Spirit as the ultimate Counselor who brings healing. Full Life also believes that God’s Truth can be seen in science. Therefore, any psychological theory or model, which helps to illuminate the Truths found in scripture, is utilized by the counselors at Full Life.
Christian counseling is not the same as talking with a priest or pastor. These men and women are not held to the same professional standard of autonomy, which is the principle that counselors are to foster the right of the client to choose the direction of his or her own life. So, while we want to help you make wise choices, we know it’s not our job to choose what to believe or what to do for you.
I would prefer non-Christian counseling. Should I still consider seeing someone here?
If you want our opinion, we are a little biased. So, here are a few things to think about when looking for a counselor – here or anywhere.
- Every counselor has a personal worldview. This means that every counselor has an individual answer to questions like “why are we here” or “what is our purpose?” At Full Life we want you to know that we have a Christian worldview so that you don’t feel surprised later.
- A professional counselor is trained with the client in mind. This means the counselor’s personal views should not impact the professional relationship. Therefore, if you do not want faith convictions to be a part of your counseling process, we are still trained to work with you from a Person Centered approach.
- A counselor cannot force you to believe that his/her worldview is true, whether Christian or not. Therefore, Full Life does not believe in “beating you over the head with a Bible.”
- If you pray, then Full Life encourages you to pray about who to pick as your counselor.
